I chose Hierarchy because Miner talked a lot about the kind of government they had in the beginning in this article. Some examples of the are in the first couple paragraphs. They subject to higher more powerful individuals in the society. They are the ones with the most shrines in their homes. They had their medicine men higher than most people in the society.
Magic Seekers
This culture is built on shrines and body rituals. The shrines are something that every family must have. They use them to store charms after they serve their purpose. The charms are used to better help others.
Ritual
They base their entire culture on rituals. The boxes for the shrines are a ritual for every family, The charms are a ritual that the medicine men have to cure people in the culture. They also have a ritual that each day the family memebers bow their before shrine.
Harsh
I chose this word because of the latipso ceremonies. They take small children away from the temple because they say that is where you go to die. Going into the temple requires you to be naked which they do not do even in their own home. The men are helped and taken care of by maidens. The women are often scrutized, manipulated and poked at by the medicine mens.
Listeners
They listen to the medicine men because they think that they will help them. The men go to temple. They listen to the medicine men and then get help from vestal maidens. The women listen to the medicine men and they get scrutinzed, maniuplated, and proded by the medicine men. The women often get in more when they listen then the men do.
Part B:
1. I feel they describe America relatively well because a lot of America is this way.
2. My words are all very biased with my own culture. None of my words are free from biased. All them have biased tendicias.
3. Harsh could be switched out for words like tough and rough.
4. If you are biased when looking into other cultures you will make unfair judgements. You are bound to be biased when investigating because there are always things that you do not agree with no matter where you go. Espeically looking into other cultures.
I am a little confused with what you were saying about the Listeners, can you explain that to me a little better? Either I read it wrong or you did, I thought the " Listener" was the witch doctor. the witch doctor was the only one who could exorcise the devil. Unless we are both right, which would be nice.

You had good descriptions with your choice of words. I would have liked to have see that level of analysis in the second part. Were you surprised with the revelation that this article was about the American culture?
ReplyDeleteI agree that "harsh" carries bias, but I'm not sure your alternatives are less biased. Is there another word which actually describes the medical process involved that is more informative and less judgmental (and I liked your use of that term "judgements" in the last section)?
I was a little surprised only because it sounded kind of like Amercian Culture but I assumed I was wrong.

I agree with your use of the word ritual and that the Nacerima base their culture on rituals. In addition, I agree that the use of the word harsh is very biased. I think this word doesn't accurately describes their culture without ever having experienced it firsthand. I also agree with your analysis in part B, number four. I think if one is biased towards another culture, they will create unfair judgements without a complete understanding of the culture.
